THE INVISIBLE MAN
In H.G. Wells’s 1897 novel, The Invisible Man, a mysterious, bandaged man named Griffin appears at the local inn. He spends most of his time in his room conducting experiments. Many chemicals and glass bottles are delivered to his room. To the innkeepers' chagrin, he causes many accidents and damage. Turns out Griffin rendered himself invisible during an experiment and is now committing escalating crimes to fund his attempts to reverse his results. So, this man may ghost you, but to be fair, he is invisible. This is a better excuse than most.
